Set of 9 Replacement Plastic Vanes for Target Arrows
History and Purpose of Arrow Fletching
In historical times, fletching was made exclusively from genuine bird feathers (most commonly goose or turkey), which were painstakingly bound to the wooden shaft with linen thread and glued with hide glue or pitch. However, the purpose has remained the exact same over the millennia: the fletching acts as a rudder, causing the arrow to spin slightly in flight, thereby stabilising its ballistic trajectory. Today, in the era of modern materials, highly durable plastic vanes are used for sporting and recreational target archery. Their massive advantage is that they are completely waterproof and do not droop or deform in the rain like natural feathers do.
Installation and Proper Usage
Replacing a damaged vane requires a little skill and patience. The remnants of the old vane and the original glue must be carefully scraped off the arrow shaft using a sharp knife, and the surface must be thoroughly degreased (e.g., with rubbing alcohol). To attach the new plastic vane, we strongly recommend using a special cyanoacrylate fletching glue designed specifically for arrows. For maximum accuracy and to achieve the perfect 120-degree angle spacing between the vanes, it is highly ideal to use an archery fletching jig. Remember one crucial rule: arrows fletched with plastic vanes should always be shot from an elevated arrow rest, not directly off the bow shelf. A plastic vane is stiff, and contact with the shelf would cause the arrow to kick out, resulting in a loss of accuracy.
Maintenance of Plastic Vanes
Plastic vanes require practically no complex care. If they become slightly crumpled or bent after an unfortunate pass-through on a target boss, they very often straighten out back to their original shape on their own after a while. Alternatively, you can assist them by applying a very gentle amount of heat (for example, using a hairdryer from a safe distance). However, proceed with extreme caution when applying heat to ensure you do not irreversibly melt the polymer!
