Knights Templar Figurine with Sword and Shield – Guardian of the Holy Land

Detailed Look at the Knight's Gear

The figurine is made of high-quality polyresin, a material that allows for the capture of even the finest details and textures once hardened. The knight is clad in chainmail (hauberk, chausses, and coif), modelled so faithfully that you can distinguish individual rings. He wears a flat-topped Great Helm (Topfhelm) on his head, typical of the 12th and 13th centuries. The helmet is decorated with gold cross fittings, adding depth and elegance to the figurine.

Over his armour, the knight wears a white surcoat and cloak, signs of purity and membership in the order. In his left hand, he firmly grips a heater shield with a red cross, while his right hand rests on the hilt of a drawn sword, its point resting on the ground. This stance symbolizes the calm before the storm and readiness for battle. The figurine stands on a base imitating rocky terrain.

Historical Insight: The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ

The Knights Templar (officially the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon) was founded around 1119 with the original purpose of protecting pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. The red cross on a white background seen on the figurine was granted to them by Pope Eugene III in 1147. This symbol was meant to remind them of the shed blood of Christ and their willingness for martyrdom. The Templars became an elite fighting force of the Crusader armies and later powerful bankers of Europe. The Great Helm worn by the figurine offered maximum head protection at the time, although it limited vision and breathing, and became a symbol of high medieval knighthood.

How to Care for the Figurine

While this Templar looks fearless, the material it is made from requires gentle handling:

  • Fragility: Polyresin is strong but can shatter if dropped on a hard floor (tiles, concrete). Place the figurine in a stable spot where it is not at risk of being knocked over.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft brush or a dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid using water and chemical cleaners, which could damage the hand-painting and patina.
  • Placement: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause colours to fade. An indoor environment is ideal for the figurine.

A replica of a Templar sword or a stylish letter opener might also go well with this figurine to complete your collection.
