Historical Development and Mechanism Design

The birth of modern handcuffs with a ratcheting mechanism dates back to the second half of the 19th century when they replaced clunky shackles with simple key locks in actual police practice. These handcuffs utilise a proven connection of both cuffs via a short, solid welded chain. This restricts hand movement much more effectively than earlier types with a long chain, but simultaneously allows for their relatively easy and quick application. The metal surface is factory-treated with a layer of nickel, which not only provides the typical and professional silver shine but primarily effectively protects the material from corrosion and environmental elements.

The Double Lock Feature and Proper Use

The handcuffs feature a classic toothed bow (ratchet) that glides smoothly through the lock body when pushed. A crucial and often overlooked feature is the so-called double lock. There is a small, narrow slit on the side of both cuffs. Once the handcuffs are applied to the wrists, this lock must be activated by inserting the pin (which is usually part of the key) into this slit. This completely blocks the mechanism, and the toothed bow can no longer be tightened any further. This is an extremely important rule to prevent accidental restriction of blood circulation or nerve damage to the detained person's wrists when they move.

Safety Warnings and Maintenance

When using them at LARPs or during airsoft games, exercise maximum caution with your fellow players. Never tighten the handcuffs forcefully to the limit, and always make sure you have the unlocking key safely in your pocket. In the event of losing the key, removing locked metal handcuffs from someone's hands is highly problematic and usually requires the assistance of a locksmith or even emergency services. To maintain the perfect appearance and smooth operation, we recommend occasionally lubricating the internal ratcheting mechanism with a single drop of silicone oil and wiping the nickel-plated surface with a dry cotton cloth after the game.
