Traditional Japanese Higonokami Pocket Knife with Horn Handle

History and Construction of the Higonokami Knife

The Higonokami is a traditional Japanese pocket knife that first appeared in the late 19th century and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It lacks any complex mechanical locking mechanism, functioning purely on the principle of friction, a system known as a friction folder. To open and secure the blade, you use the small extended tang on the blade's spine (known as a chikiri), applying constant pressure with your thumb while cutting. The blade of this model is forged from excellent DNH7 carbon steel and is differentially hardened. This means the edge itself reaches a hardness of approximately 60 HRC for perfect, long-lasting sharpness, while the spine of the blade is tempered to about 44 HRC to maintain structural toughness and prevent snapping. The deliberately retained dark forge marks give the knife a beautiful, authentically rustic appearance.

Material Care and Safe Usage

Because the blade is made of non-stainless carbon steel, it requires your regular maintenance. After each use, clean the knife carefully, wipe it completely dry, and lightly oil the blade and the pivot joint (using standard gun oil or camellia oil, for example). As the handle is crafted from natural horn, you should occasionally treat it with natural wax or oil to prevent the material from drying out and cracking. Under no circumstances should this knife be put in a dishwasher, as aggressive chemicals and hot water would irrevocably destroy both the horn and the steel. This is a very sharp, practical tool, so exercise extreme caution during handling to prevent serious injury. As the knife does not have a fixed mechanical blade lock, do not apply excessive upward pressure when cutting to ensure the blade does not close unexpectedly onto your fingers.

We highly recommend purchasing a high-quality leather belt pouch for this elegant knife to reliably protect it from damage and loss.
