Historical Context: Hammer or Cross?
This piece of jewelry is a faithful replica of one of the most significant archaeological finds from Iceland, discovered at the Foss site. The original, dating back to the 10th or 11th century, is classified as a syncretic symbol. During this period, Iceland was undergoing a gradual process of Christianisation, and many Norsemen did not abandon the old gods immediately. The Wolf Cross can thus be interpreted as a Mjölnir featuring a wolf's head (referring to Fenrir or Odin’s companions) reshaped into a cross so the wearer would not offend either the old or the new faith. Interestingly, some scholars in the past speculated about its use as a navigational aid (sundial), but its primary function was undoubtedly amuletic.
