Horse-trappers and Caparisons

The horse was as important as the sword for a medieval knight. A knight without a horse and a sword was nobody. Even his courage was almost useless without these attributes. The horse of the knight had to have the best gear to the knight on horseback was good during a fight. The horse-trappers and caparisons were parts of the equipment, of course.

The horse-trappers and caparisons were often used in the Middle Ages. Rulers and nobility decorated their horses by them. It was a great spectacle during battles and tournaments! At that time caparisons were covering almost the whole horse's body, including his head. Caparisons were positioned on the horse, and then a saddle was placed over them. They were coloured and patterned depending on their owners. Today only cloth earmuffs are used instead of decorated horse covers. These earmuffs primarily have the practical function, but they were often used as aesthetic adornment.
