Gothic Brass Buckle with Floral Rivet Plate

History and Origins of Buckles with Plate Mounts

The historical design of this buckle dates to the High and Late Middle Ages (13th to 15th centuries). During this period, securing buckles to leather straps via metal plates (chapes or mounts) riveted directly onto the leather became widespread. This method provided a much stronger connection than simply folding the leather over, while giving craftsmen a canvas for artistic expression.

The floral motif adorned on this buckle's plate was immensely popular across Gothic Europe, symbolizing purity, nobility, and authority. Buckles of this style were used not only on narrow waist belts worn over tunics and doublets, but also very frequently on plate armor fastenings, chin straps for Gothic helmets (such as bascinets or sallets), pouch hangers, and sword suspensions.

Mounting Instructions for Leather Straps

Attaching this buckle with its rivet plate to a leather strap is straightforward to accomplish in your workshop:

  • Prepare the strap: Choose a leather strap up to 17 mm (approx. 0.67 in) wide. Punch a small slot near the end for the buckle pin.
  • Position the buckle: Place the rivet plate onto the front side of the leather strap so that the pin passes through the slot and the circular buckle frame aligns with the strap edge.
  • Mark and punch holes: Mark the hole positions on the leather through the two pre-drilled rivet holes in the plate, then punch matching holes.
  • Riveting: Insert brass rivets through the holes and carefully peen them over on the backside using a small hammer and rivet set.

Care and Safety Instructions

Cast brass is a very durable metal requiring minimal care. To keep the buckle looking its best, observe these simple recommendations:

  • Wipe the buckle with a soft cotton cloth after exposure to water, rain, or sweat.
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as they can strip away the dark antiqued patina that highlights the decorative details.
  • The pin point is functional – handle with care during installation and wear to prevent scratches or minor injuries.
  • Do not bend or force the buckle plate, as excessive mechanical force may deform the brass.
  • Keep out of reach of small children due to small parts and sharp pin edges.

Recommended Accessories

We recommend pairing this buckle with a 15–17 mm (approx. 5/8 in) wide blank leather strap, a matching 14th or 15th-century Gothic brass strap end (chape), and brass belt rivets. It is ideal for crafting helmet chin straps, gambeson harness ties, leg armor straps, and delicate late medieval waist belts.
