Heron One-Handed Sword
Appearance and design: This sword has a total length of about 97 cm and a weight of about 1.5 kg (in the version with a blunt blade), which makes it an easy-to-handle one-handed weapon. The dominant feature is the straight, double-edged blade with a length of approx. 80 cm, which is made of the proven spring steel ČSN 14260. This steel is hardened in an oil bath to a hardness of approx. 47 HRC and then tempered, which gives it durability and flexibility. It should be borne in mind that the steel is not corrosion resistant and requires regular maintenance.
The blade's hilt consists of a wooden core fitted into the blade handle, which is tightly wrapped in twisted wire for a secure and comfortable grip. The Cross-guard is simple, straight, about 15.5 cm long and, like the pommel, is made of steel (cast or forged). The pommel is distinctive, faceted and resembles grinded stone. It gives the sword a distinctive look and balances the blade at the same time.
Historical classification: According to Oakeshotts typology, the blade could fall under type XII (characterised by its tapering and a fuller extending for about two-thirds of its length), the crossguard corresponds to style 2 (straight, sturdier with often rectangular cross-section) and the faceted pommel is very similar to type T5. This combination is fairly common and functional for the period.
Possible uses: If you choose a version that is adapted for historical or stage fencing, the blade will have a reinforced edge (2-3 mm) and a rounded point. In this form, the Heron Sword is suitable for contact training of fencing techniques, participation in battles or for theatre and film performances. Thanks to its classic appearance, it also makes a great addition to a historical knight or warrior costume. You can also use it as an interesting collector's item and as an impressive interior decoration.
Safety and care: When using a sword, even if it is blunt, you must act with extreme caution and responsibility for yourself and those around you.
- Always handle the sword as a potentially dangerous tool. Never point it at people or animals unless it is part of a controlled and safe drill with appropriate protection.
- Inspect the weapon before each use. Check the durability of the hilt, crossguard and pommel. Check the blade for cracks or large nicks.
- Regular maintenance is crucial. Carefully file (e.g. with a diamond file) any nicks or sharp spots on the blade caused by use to avoid injury and damage to your opponents' blades. Since the blade is not stainless, you should regularly clean and preserve it with oil to prevent corrosion.
- Proper technique in the art of fencing protects you and your weapon. Try to parry your opponent's blows with the flat of the blade, not the edge, to prevent excessive wear and tear and the risk of damage. Execute your strikes in a technically correct manner and without unnecessary force.
- A sword is not a toy. Keep it safe and out of reach of children.
