This ensemble faithfully draws upon the European knightly fashion of the High Middle Ages, specifically the 13th and 14th centuries. During this time, knights and men-at-arms wore a so-called surcoat (or tabard) over their mail or plate armour. It served to protect the scorching armour from the heat of the sun and rain, and above all, it bore the family's heraldic colours and symbols, which made the warriors identifiable on the chaotic battlefield. The ensemble consists of a long under-tunic with long sleeves, over which the sleeveless heraldic jacket is worn. The entire garment is asymmetrical and very richly decorated – it proudly bears the motifs of a heraldic eagle and the French lily (Fleur-de-lis). Furthermore, the bottom edge of the jacket is elegantly scalloped.
