Historical Heritage and 14th Century Fashion

From a historical perspective, this garment represents the typical fashion of the European nobility and wealthy patriciate during the 14th century. The sleeveless outer garment, known as a surcoat, originally evolved from the military wear worn over chainmail armour, but by the 14th century, it had become a staple of the civilian male wardrobe. The bottom hem of this surcoat is cut into decorative scallops (a technique known as dagging), which was an incredibly popular decorative element during the High and Late Gothic periods.

Sewn onto the chest of the surcoat is a striking yellow applique in the shape of a stylised tree or floral cross. Courtiers proudly wore similar motifs to display their allegiance to a specific noble house or lord. The set is completed by a classic medieval hood (gugel), which protected the head and shoulders from the elements. Worn beneath the surcoat is a yellow tunic (cotte). Contrasting fabric panels (godets) are inserted into the lower section of this tunic to add volume, ensuring your movement is never restricted, whether you are walking through a camp or engaging in a duel.

Materials and Proper Care

The surcoat is tailored from genuine cotton velvet (100% cotton), giving the costume a luxurious, prestigious appearance that catches the sunlight beautifully. The hood and tunic are made from durable fustian/moleskin (100% cotton), a tightly woven fabric that is highly resistant to abrasion while remaining pleasantly soft on the inside. Both materials are entirely natural and breathable.

To keep your costume in pristine condition for as long as possible, proper care is essential. We highly recommend professional dry cleaning only. Washing the costume in a washing machine or using a tumble dryer could irreversibly damage the pile of the velvet and ruin the stitched appliques. If you need to remove creases, only steam the velvet parts gently from the reverse side using a vertical garment steamer. A traditional iron will crush and burn the velvet pile.

Please note that the leather belt, pouch, weapon, and leather boots shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery. We highly recommend pairing this outfit with a high-quality leather knight's belt with a brass buckle and medieval leather boots, both fitting the fashion of the 14th century.
