Weapons from Game of Thrones: Why Is Valyrian Steel the Best
How familiar are you with the most famous weapons from the Game of Thrones series or books? Let’s talk about the differences between Ice and Needle, and other swords. We will tell you what material they are made of, and why Valyrian steel is so special.

Everybody Knows Game of Thrones

This legendary fantasy series follows the stories of the noble families of Lannister, Stark and Baratheon as they struggle to survive in a world of devious intrigue and wild political wars. The plot describes nine noble families scrambling bitterly to gain control over the lands of Westeros, over the Iron Throne.

They use all weapons available to them, swords, scheming, intrigue, betrayal, ambition, love and magic. You can join the adventure in the Seven Kingdoms by collecting pieces made of Valyrian steel - be a part of the fight against the White Walkers!

Game of Thrones is based on a book, but the adaptation in the form of American fantasy series became far more popular than the books. Filming of the seasons took place in several locations from different parts of the world (Northern Ireland, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Spain, USA). Seven Kingdoms are located on fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, in the world resembling the Dark Ages, full of knights, powerful wizards, dragons, and dire wolves.

Weapons Made of Valyrian Steel Were the Best

Game of Thrones features weapons made of Valyrian steel, which is a mythical alloy invented by the author of the novel, George R. R. Martin. This is what he wrote about it:

“It was alive with moonlight, translucent, a shard of crystal so thin that it seemed almost to vanish when seen edge-on. There was a faint blue shimmer to the thing, a ghost-light that played around its edges...”

Where did Valyrian steel come from and what are its properties? Valyrian steel was a type of steel used to make weapons, and it was made in Old Valyria by the Valyrians. Magic played a role in its forging and gave the material unparalleled magical characteristics.

Weapons made of this material were extremely sharp and surprisingly lightweight. The steel did not get blunt over time. After the Doom of Valyria, secret of forging Valyrian steel was lost, and the steel could not be recreated. The existing Valyrian-steel weapons became scarce, extremely valuable and powerful - effective against common weapons. Here is the passage from the books that mentions the Valyrian-steel sword called Ice:

“Catelyn had no love for swords, but she could not deny that Ice had its own beauty. It had been forged in Valyria, before the Doom had come to the old Freehold, when the ironsmiths had worked their metal with spells as well as hammers. Four hundred years old it was, and as sharp as the day it was forged. The name it bore was older still, a legacy from the age of heroes, when the Starks were Kings in the North.”

The 3 Most Famous Swords from Game of Thrones

Needle - the nimble and deadly sword of Arya Stark

Jon Snow gifted Needle to his youngest sister, Arya. It was specially designed for her - it was thin and lightweight. Ideal for nimble attacks that did not require much strength. The name of the sword was derived from its shape and because her older sister, Sansa, liked to embroider and the sisters spent a lot of time together.

Ice Was Used to Kill Its Owner

The powerful two-handed sword Ice owned by the House of Stark was forged from Valyrian steel. Eddard Stark, the Lord of Winterfell, is the first owner that appears in the first episode of the series, as he executes a deserter from the Night's Watch, using his sword Ice. However, the sword is later used to behead Eddard Stark himself. The sword is later melted and two new swords are forged out of it - Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper.

An authentic replica of this powerful sword will be pure delight for all Game of Thrones fans. The blade is made of carbon steel, the hilt is made of hardwood, the sword guard is made of zamac alloys. The ends of the guard and pommel are made of antique brass.

Longclaw Had a Change of Pommel

Longclaw was a legacy of the Mormont family passed down from one generation to another. Jeor Mormont had the pommel changed from a bear to a white wolf, and gave it to Jon Snow. Jon used the sword to kill several enemies and a White Walker, proving the unparalleled power of Valyrian steel.
