Early Gothic Leather Cuffs with Buckles for Sleeve Gathering

Historical Context and Use of Leather Cuffs

In the Middle Ages, shirts and tunics with very loose, wide sleeves were commonly worn. For more demanding activities, such as combat, crafting, or archery, it was absolutely essential to secure these sleeves safely so they would not get in the way or get caught in a bowstring or weapon. Sturdy leather cuffs, or short bracers, served exactly this purpose. This particular shorter-cut model is loosely inspired by the aesthetics of the Early Gothic period. With the help of two tightening buckles, you can easily adjust the cuff to fit your forearm perfectly. You will thus achieve not only a very authentic period look but also light protection for your skin against abrasions.

Safety Warnings and Proper Leather Care

Although these leather cuffs offer basic protection for the wrist and forearm, please bear in mind that a leather thickness of around 2 mm (approx. 0.08 inches) is not designed for full-contact heavy fencing (HEMA, buhurt) with steel weapons. For those purposes, you would need significantly thicker material reinforced with metal or plastic. However, they are perfectly suited as a costume accessory for LARP, wooden weapon fighting, and archery. To ensure the natural smooth cowhide retains its toughness and shape over the long term, treat it at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If the cuffs get wet on your expedition, always dry them exclusively slowly at normal room temperature. Never expose them to the direct heat of an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.

Sehr gute Armschienen! Jedoch nur für sehr dicke Arme gedacht! Ich werde wohl die Nieten der Schnallenbefestigung von einem Schuster versetzen lassen müssen. Keine große Sache aber das nur als Hinweis für zukünftige Käufer.
