Uhtred Hand-and-a-Half Sword for Stage Combat

Gothic Elegance and Battlefield Versatility

In terms of typology, this sword represents the classic hand-and-a-half or "bastard" swords that dominated European warfare during the 14th and 15th centuries. As plate armor evolved, knights required weapons with longer blades and extended hilts, allowing for swift one-handed strikes or a two-handed power grip when needed. The blade features a fuller running down the upper third to reduce weight while preserving structural integrity. The hilt is defined by a straight crossguard widening at the ends and a solid faceted pommel that perfectly counterbalances the long blade. The handle consists of a wooden core covered in genuine leather and bound with wire for maximum anti-slip grip.

The Historical Significance of the Name Uhtred

The name Uhtred has deep Anglo-Saxon roots in early medieval Britain. It honors Ealdorman Uhtred of Bamburgh (Uhtred the Bold), who valiantly defended the northern borders against Scots and Danes in the 11th century. Naming this weapon Uhtred pays tribute to martial tenacity, warrior spirit, and unwavering chivalric honor.

Maintenance and Safety Instructions

Always prioritize safety for yourself and your combat partners. All training and sparring activities are undertaken strictly at your own risk. This sword is classified as Class B for stage combat and controlled sparring. Please note that it is not designed for full-contact heavy armor combat such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations. Parry incoming blows with the flat side of the blade and avoid direct, forceful edge-to-edge strikes. Execute strikes with proper sporting technique without excessive force.

The blade is made of CSN 14260 spring steel, which is not stainless. Clean, dry, and oil the blade thoroughly after every use using a protective lubricant (such as Ballistol). Nicks along the edge are normal signs of wear; inspect the blade before each practice and smooth out burrs using a diamond file or sandpaper. If the crossguard loosens due to impact shock, tighten the pommel or temporarily shim the gap with fishing line. Store the sword safely away from children in a dry place.
