The Landsknechts were soldiers who served their country and their ruler. They were paid from a special land tax. In the 16th century, the Landsknechts were an important component of the Habsburg infantry. They used halberds, long spades and two-handed swords, as well as crossbows and cannons as weapons. They wore multicoloured striped clothing. It's debatable whether their units were useful in battles. However, they always attracted attention with their clothing.
