Goggles helmets of the Vendel Period

The Vendel helmet or goggles helmet, also called Nordic comb helmet, is a helmet form of the Vendel Period (650 to 800 n. Chr.). The goggles helmet appears after the riveted plate helmet (Spangenhelmen) and was common in Scandinavia and on the British islands. From Buskerud in Norway, is known the Gjermundbu helmet from the period around the year 900 - the actual Viking Age.

In Swedish prehistory, the Vendel Period (550-790) comes between the Migration Period and the Viking Age. The migrations and upheaval in Central Europe had lessened somewhat, and two power regions had appeared in Europe: the Merovingian kingdom and the Slavic princedoms in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. A third power, the Catholic Church, had begun to expand its influence.
