Circular fibulae like this were used by many historical peoples and cultures such as the Romans, Iberians, Goths, Franks and Vikings. This shape was very popular with the Romans and was particularly widespread among the Germanic peoples of the 3rd to 4th centuries. In northern and north-western Europe, it was common until around the 8th century.

How is this ring fibula closed? Stitch into the fabric at the needle where the ring fibula is to hold the garment. Then thread the needle between the ends of the ring fibula and turn the ring of the brooch 90 degrees under the tip of the needle. When you let go of the ring, the fabric immediately presses the needle against the ring and the ring fibula remains closed.
