16th Century Renaissance Dagger Queen Isabel with Calyx Quillons

Historical Context and Significance of Quillon Daggers in the 16th and 17th Centuries

The historical design of this dagger is based on surviving originals and artwork dating from 1550 to 1610 (second half of the 16th to early 17th century). In Renaissance and Mannerist Europe, the dagger became an essential dress accessory for nobles, burghers, and military officers. It was worn suspended from the waist belt on the right hip, balancing the rapier or sword worn on the left side.

Historically, quillon daggers of this style served not only as prestige dress items indicating social rank, but primarily as effective self-defense weapons and left-hand companion daggers (main-gauche) in rapier dueling. Held in the off-hand, the dagger was utilized to parry incoming rapier thrusts and deliver swift counter-attacks at close quarters. The flared calyx terminals offered crucial hand protection during swordplay. Off the dueling field, it fulfilled daily personal needs. Naming this weapon pays homage to Queen Isabella of Castile, whose legacy inspired Renaissance arts and armory.

Instructions for Use and Costume Mounting

To wear and carry this dagger correctly with your historical attire or armor, observe these steps:

  • Belt Attachment: We recommend securing the dagger to a sturdy leather waist belt or rapier hanger on your right hip using a compatible leather scabbard.
  • Handling: Grip the handle firmly when drawing; the steel wire wrap ensures a secure hold even when wearing leather or fencing gauntlets.
  • Product Intent: For safety reasons, this item is a decorative replica not intended for practical combat (such as HEMA sparring, stage fighting, or re-enactment combat). If the dagger possesses a sharp blade, it is strictly not intended for contact fencing or combat against human opponents.

Care and Safety Instructions

Tempered spring steel blades require regular maintenance to prevent corrosion and preserve their striking appearance:

  • Corrosion Protection: After every use, contact with bare hands, or exposure to moisture, wipe the blade dry with a soft cotton cloth and apply a protective coat of gun oil.
  • Storage: Store the dagger in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside a damp leather scabbard, as leather absorbs moisture and can cause rust spots.
  • Handling Safety: The dagger features a functional sharp point presenting a risk of puncture or cut injury. Handle with care and avoid striking hard metal or stone objects to prevent blade chipping or breakage.
  • Prohibition of Contact Fencing: Do not use this item for full-contact sparring, fencing practice, or martial drills against an opponent.
  • Child Safety: Keep out of reach of children and unsupervised minors.
