Historical Background and Period Fashion

This women's costume faithfully represents the fashion of the High Gothic period, which set the tone in Western and Central Europe approximately in the 13th and 14th centuries. The historically accurate ensemble consists of two layers, exactly as dictated by the strict fashion of the time. The underdress (the so-called cotte) forms the base of the garment and is equipped with long, tightly cut sleeves. The overgarment (known as the surcote), on the other hand, has short sleeves and its overall length reaches down to the floor, adding majestic grandeur and elegance to the wearer. The surcote is elegantly cinched at the waist with a long fabric belt. Around the neckline and on the very bottom hem, the overgarment is luxuriously decorated with a silver Leonese braid. In the Middle Ages, such a richly layered and decorated garment was worn primarily by women from the higher social classes and daughters of wealthy burgher families. It was a clear and visible display of the family's wealth and social status.

Costume Care and Warnings

To ensure this beautiful historical garment serves you as long as possible and retains its shape and colours, we recommend following the cleaning and maintenance instructions. Wash the dress very gently, ideally by hand or in a washing machine on a gentle cycle designed for linen and cotton (at a maximum temperature of 30 °C / 86 °F). Strictly avoid using harsh bleaches and do not dry the dress in a tumble dryer, as this could cause irreversible shrinkage of the natural fibres. Hang it freely to air dry and iron on a medium setting suitable for linen textiles. We would like to point out that the jewellery (earrings, necklaces), footwear, and other accessories shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery.
