The design of this children's garment is rooted in the European fashion of the fourteenth century, specifically the High to Late Gothic period. It was during this era that the fashion known as mi-parti experienced a massive boom, where garments were sewn together from fabrics of two contrasting colours, originally reflecting the heraldic colours of a noble house. The set itself consists of an outer surcoat (often called a cotte) and a hood (cowl or gugel). The hood with its significantly elongated point, known as a liripipe, was an absolutely indispensable accessory for all social classes in the fourteenth century. The rich velvet and faux fur trim clearly indicate the noble origins of the wearer, as such materials were highly expensive.

How To Wear The Gothic Costume Correctly

This boy's costume is ideal for historical reenactments, medieval processions, LARP, and various school or leisure events with a historical theme. Dressing is very straightforward. The outer surcoat with its long, narrow sleeves is simply pulled over the head. The two-tone hood, which protects the shoulders and neck, is then slipped on and secured under the neck with a button closure. The long liripipe of the hood can be left to drape freely down the back, or it can be stylishly wrapped around the neck like a scarf in cooler weather. Please be aware that the yellow leather belt shown in the photographs is not included in the delivery and serves only as an illustration of wear.

Material And Recommended Care For Velvet

The garment is tailored from high-quality genuine velvet made of one hundred percent cotton, which stands out for its softness and noble sheen. The bottom hem of the surcoat is bordered with a strip of faux fur, faithfully imitating the winter fur linings of historical garments. To ensure the velvet retains its beauty, never wash the costume in hot water and avoid using a tumble dryer. It is also completely unsuitable to iron directly on the velvet pile (the right side of the fabric), as this would irrevocably burn and damage the material. We recommend entrusting the garment to a professional dry cleaner, or washing it very gently by hand in lukewarm water and drying it flat.
