Evolving from the Kettle Hat, the Morion was worn by early Spanish explorers and conquistadors during the 16th and early 17th centuries. It is characterized by the flat brim and a comb, or "crest, "running from front to back which helped deflect blows and strengthened the top. In later years, the crest was often exaggerated into a decorative feature. The Morion, though often associated with Spaniards, was also common among foot soldiers throughout Europe.
