Women's Renaissance Gown with Chiffon Sleeves Engelais

Historical Context and Usage of the Gown

This replica of a historical gown is based on the fashion of the upper social classes in the second half of the 16th century. Noblewomen favoured the rich layering of expensive materials to demonstrate their high social standing. The dress features a decorated, firmly stiffened bodice that gives the body a conical shape. The neckline is lined with regular chiffon puffs. The contrast between heavy fabrics and airy chiffon sleeves, gathered at the elbows and cuffs with a gold embroidered ribbon, was a typical hallmark of Renaissance elegance. The front skirt panel is made of textured decorative brocade, while the rest of the skirt is composed of rich velvet. The impression is completed by a small lace cap stitched with beads.

To accompany this gown, we highly recommend acquiring a thin linen chemise as a hygienic underlayer and leather women's Renaissance shoes corresponding to the fashion of the 16th century.

Sizes, Colours, and Custom Tailoring

This historical Renaissance dress is available in standard ready-to-wear sizes according to our size charts. However, we will gladly make it exactly to your measurements at no extra charge. Upon request, the dress can also be sewn in other colour variants according to our fabric swatch books. Simply note your desired colour in the comment field of your order. Always provide the swatch book number, the colour letter, and the colour name (e.g. 03-A-yellow). If you choose a fabric with a different composition, there may be a change in price, which we will consult with you beforehand.

Maintenance and Fabric Care

To ensure the dress remains in perfect condition for a long time, it requires gentle care. Due to the complex combination of materials, it is essential to leave the cleaning exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. Never wash this dress in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it. Avoid ironing the velvet directly to prevent permanent flattening of the pile. The velvet parts may only be carefully steamed from the reverse side. Please always follow our detailed instructions for the cleaning and maintenance of costumes.
