Knight's Belt from the Helden vom Schönen Brunnen

The Schöner Brunnen, designed in the shape of a Gothic church spire, was built from 1385 to 1396. The fountain is adorned with forty painted figures representing the worldview of the Holy Roman Empire, including the so-called Nine Worthies (in German Neun Helden – the “Nine Heroes”) as representatives of pagan antiquity (Hector of Troy, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar), Judaism (Judas Maccabeus, David, Joshua) and Christianity (King Arthur, Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon). In the courtly chivalric milieu of the 14th century, this group of historical, biblical or legendary heroes embodied the ideals of chivalry established in the Middle Ages.

As the figures were made of sandstone, the fountain had to undergo several restorations over the centuries, until the surviving remains of the Gothic original were eventually transferred to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum (Germanic National Museum) in Nuremberg in the 19th century, where they can still be admired today. The fountain that stands on Nuremberg's main market square today, with its colourful figures, is a replica that was rebuilt in 1912 based on the weathered original.

Our approx. 6 cm wide belt is composed of a thick leather core encased in an additional, thinner, black leather layer that is stitched at the back. Just like the statue of King Arthur in Nuremberg, it is adorned with a series of square plates and a quatrefoil-shaped belt buckle, all made of brass and featuring a floral motif. The knight’s belt is available in three sizes and does not have any punch holes. The back of the buckle is equipped with a pin that anchors into the hole in the end tip.

This fine leather belt is a classy, authentic addition to any medieval garb and an ideal accessory for medieval markets, re-enactment events and LARP gatherings. It is most fitting for settings of the High and Late Middle Ages, and particularly well-suited for the representation of a 14th century knight or nobleman.

Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.

Please keep in mind that leather is a natural product, and variations in colour and grain are quite normal. Each item is thus unique, and above pictures are for reference only.

The buckle and brass fittings may show a slight patina or surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain them on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel and brass care.
