Renaissance Brass Spectacle Double Buckle for Narrow Belts 1510-1520

Historical Context and Usage

Double buckles, often referred to as spectacle buckles, were an absolute standard during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This specific shape, with its distinctive central protrusions on the frame, is typical of the first quarter of the 16th century. The product is cast from brass, a material historically very popular for making clothing accessories due to its resistance to corrosion and its golden shine. The buckle perfectly complements both civilian and military garments, whether you are portraying a wealthy burgher, a landsknecht, or a mercenary.

Attachment Instructions and Proper Care

Attaching this medieval buckle to a leather strap is very straightforward. The strap of the recommended width is folded over the central axis of the buckle. The prong must pass freely through a punched or cut hole in the leather. Subsequently, the two layers of leather are firmly joined together, traditionally using either brass rivets or by sewing with strong linen thread. To keep the brass surface looking authentic, we recommend gently polishing it occasionally with a cloth and a special polishing paste for non-ferrous metals. Avoid prolonged contact with aggressive chemicals and excessive moisture.

Safety Warnings

Please remember that this product is intended exclusively as an accessory for historical clothing and gear. Under no circumstances should you use the buckle for securing persons, climbing, rappelling, or suspending heavy loads. The construction and material are not designed to withstand extreme tension, which could lead to the buckle breaking and resulting in injury or property damage.
