Monk Costumes

The word monk comes from Latin and Greek and means lonely. Monks are religious people, completely committed to their faith. They constantly practice their minds and their bodies according to their religion. In the Middle Ages, Christian monks could live with others in monasteries or alone as hermits. Monastic clothing usually consisted of a long cowl or robe, often supplemented by a scapular (i.e. a strip of cloth with a hole for the head, which was worn in front over the chest down and on the back over the shoulder blades, sometimes it also included a hood). The robes varied mainly according to individual orders.
