Construction and Customisation

The hat is manufactured from high-quality 100% cotton felt with a thickness of approx. 0.12" (3 mm). This material is sturdy enough to hold its shape while remaining pliable enough for your creative adjustments. The wide brim is the standout feature; you can leave it flat to shield yourself from the elements or pin one or more sides to the crown using a stitch or a decorative brooch to create a classic "cocked" cavalier style.

While the smallest size is approx. 22" (56 cm), we have a tip for young musketeers. If the hat is intended for a child or someone with a smaller head, you can easily stick a strip of foam or thick fabric behind the internal sweatband. This padding ensures the hat stays securely in place even on smaller heads.

Historical Context: The Cavalier's Shield

In the 17th century, a wide-brimmed hat was more than a fashion statement—it was a vital piece of equipment. The brim protected a gentleman's face from the sun and rain during long days in the saddle. Soldiers and musketeers began pinning up one side of the brim to prevent it from interfering with their muskets (which could weigh up to 10 lbs / 4.5 kg) or their long rapiers. The character of d'Artagnan, based on the real-life Charles de Batz-Castelmore, popularised this style worldwide. During this period, hats were often adorned with ostrich plumes; the number and colour of the feathers denoted the wearer's wealth and military rank.

Maintenance and Safety Guidelines

To ensure your felt hat lasts for many campaigns, follow these care instructions:

• Do not wash the hat! Machine washing or detergents will ruin the felt structure beyond repair.
• If the hat gets wet, it may shrink slightly. Allow it to air dry naturally away from heat sources. If it becomes too tight, you can steam it over a pot of boiling water to soften the fibres and gently stretch it back to size.
• Remove dust with a soft clothes brush in the direction of the nap.

Warning: This hat is not protective gear. It offers no protection against weapon strikes during HEMA training or staged combat. The material is flammable; please exercise extreme caution near campfires and torches.
