This sword is crafted in honour of Marcus Petreius (c. 110 BC – 46 BC), a distinguished Roman legate and commander during the late Republic. Petreius was renowned for his tactical discipline and personal valor in close-quarters battle, most notably defeating the army of the conspirator Catiline at the Battle of Pistoria in 62 BC.

Typologically, this gladius is inspired by the sidearms wielded by Roman legionaries between the 3rd century BC and 3rd century AD (resembling the Mainz/Fulham transitional style with its long triangular point). Designed primarily for deadly thrusts from behind the protection of a large Scutum shield, the short length of the gladius allowed rapid maneuverability in dense combat formations.
