History and Origin of the Ancient Chiton

This chiton is inspired by historical garments from Classical and Hellenistic Greece (approximately 5th to 2nd century BC). In the ancient world, the chiton served as the primary undergarment worn by both men and women. When leaving the house, a traditional outer wrap called a himation was worn over it. Our replica represents the Ionic chiton, which, unlike the heavier Doric version, featured a sack-like shape, was made of lighter linen-based fabric, and was pulled over the head.

Design and Proper Way of Wearing

Women's chitons were traditionally longer than those worn by men, requiring a belt or cord at the waist. The excess fabric was pulled up over the belt to form a beautiful, cascading fold known as a kolpos. This design element gives the garment its unmistakable ancient volume and drape. Interestingly, while the classical Ionic chiton was sleeveless or featured short sleeves fastened with brooches (fibulae), long sleeves did not emerge until the later Hellenistic period.

Care for this historical garment with respect to ensure it serves you well for years. We recommend hand washing or using a gentle machine cycle at up to 30°C (86°F) with mild detergent. Do not tumble dry; let the chiton air dry naturally on a clothing hanger. It is best to iron the fabric while still slightly damp at a medium temperature setting to maintain its flowing draping properties. Avoid any contact with sharp objects, unsheathed blades, or rough armor plates, as they can easily snag or tear the delicate weave.

Recommended Accessories

For a complete 5th-century BC Greek impression, we recommend pairing this chiton with a traditional himation cloak, a leather or cord belt to achieve the classic kolpos fold, and period-accurate bronze or brass fibulae (brooches) to secure the shoulders. Please note that the belt, footwear, and other accessories shown in the promotional photographs are not included with this product.

Note: Since the chiton has a loose fit and the length is adjusted by draping it over the belt (kolpos), the bust circumference and body height are the primary guide values.
