A Universal Buckle Through History and Installation Guide

The double rectangular buckle design (a center-bar buckle) is among the most timeless and ancient functional concepts in the history of dress. Similar simple and highly utilitarian buckles appeared in Western and Central Europe as early as the High Middle Ages (13th century) and continued in virtually unchanged form through the Renaissance, Baroque, and Early Modern periods. They were used not only for fastening standard leather belts but were also crucial in constructing military strapping, armour fastening straps, helmet chinstraps, sword hangers, and travel bag straps.

Mounting the buckle onto a leather strap is very straightforward. The buckle is designed for leather straps 25 mm (0.98 in) wide (the inner clearance of the frame is 27 mm / 1.06 in). Fold the end of the leather strap around the center bar of the buckle. At the fold, punch or cut an elongated slot to allow movement for the hinged pin. Once the pin is inserted, securely rivet the folded leather together using brass rivets or stitch it thoroughly with strong waxed linen thread. This creates a joint capable of withstanding heavy strain during combat movement.

If you prefer a radiant shine, we recommend occasionally polishing the buckle gently with a dry cotton cloth and a metal polish designed for non-ferrous metals. Exercise caution when riveting onto leather—strike only the rivet itself so as not to dent or deform the buckle frame. Avoid bending the pin sideways with force when fastening straps to prevent metal fatigue.
