Scutum is the Latin word for shield, although in modern times it is associated with a rectangular, semi-cylindrical body shield worn by Roman legionaries. Such a square ridge is often found on a Roman scut. The umbo cover was originally designed to reflect blows from the center of the circular shield, although it also provided space for the shield to grasp.

Roman shields were of different types depending on the role of the soldier who wore them. Oval, round, and rectangular shields have been used throughout Roman history.
