The shashka (Circassian for long knife) is a sabre of Caucasian origin which was adopted by the Russian military in the 19th century and ultimately became the legendary weapon of the famed Cossacks. Its most characteristic feature was its hilt which lacked a conventional guard and was equipped with a distinctive downturned pommel. Owing to its unique overall design, the shashka was most effective when wielded from horseback and thus perfectly suited for the cavalry. The beautiful piece we offer here is a reproduction of an original Soviet 1927 Pattern (M1927) Cossack sabre manufactured in 1934 in the Zlatoust Armoury, USSR. This type of NKVD shashka was still used in the ranks of the Red Army during World War II.More information
