The Napoleonic Wars (1803-1845) were held between France and other European states. They were led by the famous Napoleon Bonaparte. His aim was France's hegemony over Europe. He lived through both success and defeat. Napoleon I. was a French general and statesman. He was appointed by the French emperor in 1804. The Napoleonic Wars ended following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo on 18 June 1815 and the Second Treaty of Paris. It was followed by an era called Bourbon Restoration. Napoleon was expelled from France. After six months as a prisoner in Germany, Napoleon spent the last few years of his life in exile in England, with Eugénie and their only son. Louis XVIII was placed on the throne and ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1814 to 1824
Napoleon Bonaparte had a strong will, can-do spirit, extraordinary courage and an admirable memory. Napoleon was able to deal with three different and complicated issues at one time. It is said that he was short in stature, and his face was quite beautiful, but he had a lot of mistresses. Women were absolutely fascinated by his charisma. Many of his sayings are repeated even today, like „Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.”
People dressed themselves according to Rococo fashion in the 18th century. The tone of fashion was set by France, of course. Wasp waists, corsets, crinolines and many miniature accessories were typical for women. The nobility wore white wigs. Gentlemen dressed tight trousers, white stockings, decorated shoes and satin jackets. A face-powder was necessary complement for a perfect appearance. Perfumed white powder was used for almost everything: hands, faces, wigs. It substituted the negligent personal hygiene that was common at that time.
