Black powder was discovered in China between the 7th and 9th century. Series production of firearms began at the end of the Middle Ages. Cannons, rifles and muskets can be classified as the first firearms. But weapons for combat at close quarters were still not made. Black gunpowder was used to the end of the 19th century. This powder was used by the Hussites in the 15th century. Smokeless powder was invented later.

Flintlock pistols

Flintlock pistols emerged in the 17th century and replaced wheel-lock pistols that were used until about the beginning of the 18th century, because they were less resistant to weather conditions and more expensive to manufacture.

The percussion pistol represents the next and final step of the development muzzleloader guns. This gun was for a long time the only handgun until the mid-19th century when it was replaced in the military field by the multi-shot revolver. Single-shot pistols were henceforth used in mainly for target shooting and as duel weapons.

Revolver

Samuel Colt began in the Patent Arms Co m'g Paterson with the serial production of percussion revolvers in 1837, their further developments in the American Civil War played an important role. The company Smith & Wesson introduced their small-calibre S & W No. 1 in 1858 as the first breech-loading revolver on the market. It was loaded with prefabricated cartridges that were loaded into a rotating drum. In 1869, after the Rollin White patent had expired, which protected the production of revolvers with pierced drums, big-calibre revolvers were developed, which dominated the market until the end of the century. Well-known examples are the Colt Single Action Army, the Smith & Wesson No. 3 and the British Webley revolver. These were used worldwide as military and police service weapons.
