Viking Sword & Seax Scabbards
In the Middle Ages, a piece of wood with leather or cloth could serve as a scabbard for a sword. The inside of the scabbard was lined with fur, which had several functions: the fat-soaked fur formed a greasy film each time the sword was inserted into the blade, protecting the sword from corrosion; secondly, the fur inside the scabbard was mechanically fixed.
