The style of clothing meant a membership of the social class and social status in the ancient Rome (just as in next historical periods). Although the protective function of the shoe always came first, also aesthetic function was important. Roman shoes were considered as symbols of power, wealth and civilization. Only the poorest people and slaves went barefoot. Some slaves wore even primitive sandal called SOLEAE.

Classic Roman shoes were formed from straps similarly to sandals and were laced above the ankle - around the calf.

The so-called CALIGAE were typical shoes of Roman soldiers. The soles of the sturdy sandals were improved with nails. Number of nails was dependent on rank.

Try to wear our beautiful and high-quality Roman and Romanesque shoes! You will not regret it. However, you can also choose other historical shoes from our offer, e.g. medieval shoes.

Advisory Service: Questions and Answers

What is the difference between industrially rolled and hand-forged blades?

In the case of hand-forged blades, our blacksmith takes the already rolled spring steel and forges it by hand on the anvil or under the drop hammer. The steel gets more solid (denser) by forging. In the case of industrially rolled spring steel blades, the sheets of steel plate is cut to strips under drop snips, then ground or milled and immediately forged into the annealing furnace and oil-quenched. The properties of both kinds of steels are not very different, since industrial rolling is already very good! On forged blades are usually blacksmith marks, which give them an authentic and unique look.
