Ancient clothing

The ancient clothing was not only a question of fashion, but also an indication of social status and wealth. Typical Greek clothing consisted of three parts – chiton or peplos and cloak. If the owner wore all these, they showed what social class they belonged to. Of course, material, colours (in Greece, colors indicated social status), ornaments and length also played a big role. The most commonly used material was wool and linen, later cotton and silk. The finer the fabric was, the more expensive. The length of the chiton varied – shorter ones were preferred by working men, soldiers and the poor, mainly because it did no get in the way. The longer chiton was then popular with women, the elderly and the upper class.
