This workshop uses special technique in producing swords. The sword guards are not soldered unlike those from many further workshops. The tang of the blade, which is the most stressed part of the sword, is heated up by the soldering. This may change the steel properties of this important blade part. Not soldering the guard / cross enables to sustain identical properties of the blade in its full length, which is an advantage from this point of view. The disadvantage is the fact that the guards / crosses get loosened faster due to natural wear. We offer two possibilities how to re-fixate the guards / crosses: 1. When the guard got loosened due to vibrations of usual use is the solution quite easy. Lay the flat side of the sword with its guard / cross onto a flat steel surface / ground – preferably onto an anvil. Two or three well aimed hammer strokes are usually enough for a good re-fixating the cross/ guard. 2. When the guard / cross got loosened due to direct blows by another blade e.g. – is the situation a little worse. The wooden component of the haft got deformed and has to be exchange or mended. Please unwrap the handle from leather and fix the wooden part. We have for you one trick how to enhance the shock resistance of the guard: insert a small silencer / muffler between the wooden part and the guard / cross. A piece of tire tube with the same section proved best in the workshop. The silencer / muffler should be suited to the cross / guard precisely and is in leather. |
