A crossbow is a weapon consisting of a bow mounted on a stock that shoots projectiles, often called bolts or quarrels. Crossbows were often used in the Middle Ages. Now crossbows are used as sporting weapons. To use crossbows for hunting is no allowed in some countries (i.e. in the Czech Republic).

The first historical records about the crossbow come from China from the year 200 BC. However, the crossbow is probably even older and comes from Southeast Asia.

Crossbows were not effective weapons in history. Loading the crossbow took quite a long time. It was its negative trait. Crossbows proved themselves during sieges of castles. The ballista was an ancient missile weapon which launched a large projectile at a distant target. It was created around 400 BC. The ballista was in fact an upgraded crossbow.
